Small-Town Dating Dilemmas: Hold Me, I Miss New York!
The grammar and syntax of dating is changing. Online dating has lost a lot of the perceived stigma that it used to have. Just as reluctant autumn yielded to winter, on a particularly cold evening in Budapest, late , I was up reading for my class the next day. My house and fellow university-mate ensconced herself on the other end of the sofa, sliding her fingers across the screen of her newly bought smartphone. She persevered with that action for the next half hour with no rest.
Curious, but mostly tickled and desperately seeking distraction from my 80 pages of academic readings, I inquired as to what she was doing.

I grew up 15 miles from New York City, spending my formative romantic years in the suburbs that would one day be made famous on Real Housewives of New Jersey. After four years of college in Massachusetts, I spent a mostly single half-decade in Manhattan dating people from every borough — but it wasn’t until I moved miles away to the absolute middle of nowhere that I found a dating culture richer, more fun, and far more enjoyable than anything Manhattan had to offer.

I’d never tended bar before, and loved listening to people’s stories while pouring them generous shots of clear and bronze liquors; snapping metal caps off Genny Light and Busch bottles; and dutifully scribbling notes in my reporter’s journal behind the bar.
What I didn’t realize at the time was that I’d just sidled up to a front-row seat to the dating culture of rural America. And I got its lessons, in abundance. In cities, you can visit different bars on different nights and not run into any of the same people. In five years in New York City, I can’t even name more than one person from any of the apartment buildings I lived in.
But in Redwood, like rural outposts all over the US, I knew about people’s love lives before we’d even been introduced. People in the barroom knew everything about their neighbors and neighbors’ neighbors. Dating wasn’t quiet. People came into the bar a day after I’d been out with someone, and asked how the date was.

Tina Gregory is ready to put herself back out there again. Her ideal dating world would be a sunny, coastal town, but logistically, this is a bit of a challenge. I roll over just to be temporarily blinded by my phone light. If I want any chance to work out, I have to be at the student wellness center the minute they open. Tinder likes to remind people they are single and alone at their most desperate hour on a Thursday or Friday night. Or I guess what most people consider their lucky hour. This is the normal hour for people to be out at the bars or clubs, trying to find their next hookup or date. Do the kids still do that nowadays?

Tuscans are not romantic. You might have this image of overly passionate and effusively affectionate Italians who will sweep you off your feet, but that does not apply to most Tuscans. They are technically Italian, but my husband, a born and bred Maremmano from the wild southern corners of the region, once famously declared that kissing was for girls and holding hands a ridiculous pastime.
In researching this piece, I chatted to as many locals as I could find in my small town. I descended on our main piazza at 8am, when the nonni gather to gossip on park benches and Facebooked a handful of the younger generation. I even swapped stories with the Lotharios in my kindergarten English class. Like this article? A little lying and even more flattery seems to do it for Francesco, but when it comes to the older generation of small town Tuscans, double dating is the way to go.
