Dota 2 matchmaking update removes MMR gain/loss variance

Valve recently introduced some small but radical changes to the ranked matchmaking of Dota 2. This is not the first time the company has changed its matchmaking and not the last. Valve has implemented a pentagon graph that has empty bars. The impact of these changes will be visible after a reasonable time has passed. However, there are certain things that are clear. Players having a huge difference in their skill level for different roles may abuse this system.

Six months have passed in the new Dota 2 Ranked system, which means the first season has already elapsed. Introduced in November, it brought a new way to show off your matchmaking accomplishments and skill.

The DOTA 2 matchmaking update allowing role queue in ranked for all opened up the floodgates for high MMR players to, once again, have.

Dota 2 players found their matchmaking score erased as Valve introduced on August 6 an experimental matchmaking system developed towards the team play core aspect of the game. The MMR numbers are erased but the Medal earned so far in the season stays in place. The new update focuses on two big aspects: the removal of the two types of MMRs, party and solo and the addition of role MMR. While Valve are aware that the first concept will raise the most controversy in the community, the latter is actually something that the players have been hoping to see implemented for a long time now.

Most of the issues related to this we think we can solve with better algorithms. Another common case is playing with a friend who has a higher mmr than you, expecting that it will cause your mmr to go higher. While that has been at least partly true in previous matchmaking system iterations, our most recent version does a fairly good job of addressing this. We have enough data to form matches that cause you to have an even chance to win by carefully choosing the opponents that have a similar makeup.

At a base level, we think mathematically we are able to have high confidence that playing with a friend will not have a material effect on your average mmr value with a properly balanced matchmaker. To make it possible, Valve have moved the Ranked Roles from Dota Plus feature to the base ranked matchmaking. Starting today, before queuing for a ranked match, players will have to choose the role s they want to play. The option gives more than once choice and it actually spans across all five roles on the team, Carry, Mid, Offlane, Soft Support and Hard Support.

From now on, Dota 2 will aim to bring the best matchmaking experience ahead of the random role pickers. The queue system has somewhat been revamped, pushing players to pick their role ahead of the queue. Now, players must pick their designated role on the team before they queue up and hop into a match, formulating a much better gameplay experience. This sort of matchmaking allows ranked roles for everyone, with lower role positions to queue faster, while cores will have to wait a bit longer to form their composition.

But this is a massive move by Valve and already hugely anticipated and greeted by its community. The previous Ranked Roles matchmaking had a significant contribution to this methodology, which had proven the level of communication and co-op in those matches.

Dota 2: Update Changes Ranked Mode, Combats Cheaters and Smurfs, Adds Draft Reporting

The new Ranked season is here. The changes in this update will be rolled out gradually over the next two days as we iron out bugs. The calibration part of the new season will begin this Thursday. One big observation that we had since the previous update was that matches with misaligned roles had a meaningful impact on game quality. An example of this is when the mid player for one team has the highest rank on their team, and the mid player on the other team has the lowest rank. This tended to cause games to be really volatile and not enjoyable.

After the first season of medal-based matchmaking, which began in November, Valve is ready to start again with a few small tweaks.

Valve unveiled the newest update directed towards Dota 2 matchmaking system, which has been hit with several updates in recent months, with the most recent making some much-needed changes to the scaling MMR based on relative skill and the ranked game modes. Valve explained that they decided for this move because they believe players who play solo have much greater impact on the way the game is played, compared to those who enter ranked matches in a party, and will for that reason award the solo players with the ability to climb the ladder faster, while players who play in a party will see their MMR increase at a slower pace.

That is, however, something that works in theory, will that translate into the real games, however, remains to be seen. The Ranked Roles will from now on be “locked” behind a so-called ticket system. Previously, the players earned the fast queues by selecting every role, meaning they could be assigned to play any of the five roles. Now, the Dota 2 players will earn four Ranked Roles games when selecting all the positions and will be eligible to play Ranked Roles if they pick two support boxes.

Ranked Classic, which does not let you select any roles, on the other side, will replace the Slow Queue games. That issue was already addressed by Ylli “garter” Ramadani, who publicly expressed his dissatisfaction with Dota 2 in his announcement, where he unveiled he will be leaving Dota 2 in favour of League of Legends , where he looks to continue his gaming career.

The updates overall failed to inspire much enthusiasm in the Dota 2 community, however, the Ranked Roles game mode has been widely accepted as one of the best additions Dota 2 have made to its matchmaking as it mitigates the all too familiar arguments between the players about who will play what role, which more times than not lead to abuse and ultimately toxic community and unpleasant games. While Ranked Roles is by no means a perfect solution, it is a step in the right direction and the Dota 2 community seems to be accepting the changes with open arms.

As far as the MMR changes are concerned, it seems like it could lead to some high-ranked players earning significantly more MMR than they did under the old system.

Dota 2 Ranking System

Matchmaking is the process through which the system groups players into opposing teams for public games modes. With the exception of bot games, matchmaking is mostly determined by matchmaking ratings MMR. Unranked or casual games do not display matchmaking ratings and still doesn’t track your MMR for solo and party queues. This function matches you against another player in the Mid Lane.

Valve released a new update for Dota 2 this Thursday, which will welcome changes to Dota 2 matchmaking, MMR system and ranked game.

This time, an update brings a new MMR system that functionally gives players separate MMRs for each of the five roles included in ranked roles. Winning or losing games will modify your single rank. Though the return to a single MMR score might suggest that Valve is returning to the previous setup, this new system further segments things in ranked matchmaking. It should theoretically result in greater parity between teams, regardless of what role a player is assigned during the game.

Previously, the MMR system only distinguished between support and core, with core encompassing carry, mid, and offlane roles. Former Dota 2 pro player and current analyst Kevin “Purge” Godec discussed the change on Twitter , and seemed positive regarding what its impact will be. This update to Dota 2 is the latest in a series of changes to the ranked matchmaking experience.

Alongside this was the introduction of role-based matchmaking. While Dota 2 has long had a free-for-all style approach to assigning roles, with players ideally sorting things out amongst themselves during the drafting phase, Valve allowed people to queue specifically to play for a specific role. This was meant to combat such issues as players fighting over roles and griefing one another if they didn’t get their preferred position.

Matchmaking

After a few mini-patches both before and after TI 9 , Valve has dropped a huge update concerning better matchmaking, combatting cheaters, stomping out smurfs, and a change to ranked play. That said, alongside the new DPC set of games also comes the new ranked season for the rest of the player base. Here is everything players need to know about Valve’s new take on the Dota 2 Ranked season.

From now on, Valve has made sure that matchmaking puts a larger emphasis on making sure that the roles are more symmetric. In other words, if a player from a team who is assigned the carry role is Divine 5, the enemy carry should either be the same rank or as close as possible to it. This change should make most matchmaking games much fairer.

From now on, Dota 2 will aim to bring the best matchmaking experience ahead of the random role pickers. The queue system has somewhat.

This update brings a massive overhaul of the competitive matchmaking algorithm, just in time for the next ranked season. The first big change addresses the mismatched ranks of people playing against each other in the same role. The update hopes to remedy this problem by prioritizing rank symmetry across both teams. In the past, the matchmaking algorithm would prioritize rank spread across the opposing teams. Should this update work as intended, it would make for some more evenly matched games.

The next change adds a report function in the earliest stages of the game. In an attempt to make sure everyone plays the role they queued for, players will now be able to report others in the drafting phase and the first few minutes of a game. The Dota 2 team states that with this reporting system, and some other detection features, they will be able to be more aggressive towards players who abuse the matchmaking system.
